Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, minister of communications and digitalisation, has cautioned Qwik Loan clients who refuse to re-register their SIM cards that they will be found out. She called their actions corrupt.

Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo Prampram, claimed Qwik Loan clients who hadn’t paid were waiting for their SIMs to be deactivated.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, July 30 about the earlier plan to end SIM re-registration today, Sunday, July 31, Sam George said, “You have Qwik Loan customers who have taken facilities and people are holding back and not wanting to pay, they are saying, okay, if you want to deactivate my SIM, let’s deactivate it.

“It discourages IT investment.” This rapid loan has created a place for a new cadre of small firms, individuals who take 500 or 1000 and operate businesses and pay back these facilities.

“The Qwikloan has fed families, you can’t underestimate its worth. The industry is worried. How can I invest in OTT when a legislative directive may cost me millions or billions? These are examples of policy incoherence.

At a news conference in Accra on July 31, the Communications Minister remarked, “I’ve also been told that certain persons who have gotten qwik loans from their service providers have opted not to register their SIMs to avoid repaying the loans.” You’ll be caught for that awful depravity.

She extended the re-registration deadline.

“Mobile Network Operators MNOs and the National Communications Authority (NCA) (and I dare say the National Identification Authority) have all hired extra people, purchased the required supplies, and incurred substantial sums to undertake this exercise effectively. Any delay raises costs. I’ve reluctantly decided to give a last conditional extension after consulting with the industry and considering the aforementioned issues.

“The program will stop on its anniversary, September 30.” One year of SIM registration. Any SIM not completely registered by the end of August would be blocked from voice and data services.

Unregistered SIMs will cost extra. September’s news briefing will detail all disciplinary actions. Please don’t blame your supplier for your own actions. “Forewarned is forearmed.”
