Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, has urged Ghanaians to “cool down” and await the conclusion of the country’s negotiations with the IMF (IMF).

He believes Ghanaians would soon recognize and thank the Akufo-Addo administration for its IMF visit, according to this NPP stronghold.

“Ghanaians will soon praise us for going to the IMF. The IMF is not a stranger that we are going to beg, we are prominent African member of the Fund and they are there to advise the government. The president in his wisdom has decided it’s about time we spoke to them and we are going to speak to them. The terms we will bring is the most important thing,” he told Nhyira FM in an interview.

Rather than worrying about the benefits of Ghana’s participation in the fund, Dr. Afriyie Akoto said, the people of Ghana should be worried about the conditions attached to such participation.

According to the Agric Minister, the government’s decision to approach the IMF may be attributed to Covid-19 and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, both of which he claims has hindered the country’s normal operations.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the former government (NDC) had different reasons for approaching the IMF than the present administration has.

For the sake of bolstering the economy, President Akufo-Addo authorized the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, on Friday, June 1, to begin official negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Because the NPP administration had promised Ghanaians that it would utilize indigenous solutions to the country’s economic difficulties rather than seek assistance from the IMF, the decision has elicited a range of opinions and debate
