Obuasi West MP Kweku Kwarteng of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed efforts to abolish the E-levy.

Some Ghanaians have called for the contentious tax to be repealed since the government has requested help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to Mr. Kwarteng, the E-levy was never considered as a replacement for the International Monetary Fund.

In the past, I’ve heard individuals say that an IMF program would alleviate the agony of the E-levy. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is scheduled to arrive and begin negotiations. It’s not like they come to your nation and say, “Let’s lower your taxes.”

In fact, they’re likely to think that the E-levy is insufficient. You may have to take on additional revenue methods if the IMF comes to your economy, he warned on Citi FM in Accra. “Don’t hire people, decrease your expenses and boost your income,” he added.

On Friday, July 1, 2022, the Ministry of Information stated that President Akufo-Addo has granted Ghana permission to begin negotiations with the IMF for a bailout.

So, president Akufo Addo’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would be handled by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, according to the government.
