174 dead after fans stampede to exit Indonesian soccer match

At least 174 people were killed and another 180 more were injured in one of the deadliest sports stadium disasters in history during a football game in Indonesia.

According to reports, two police officers and a five-month-old baby were among those murdered after a riot broke out at a football match between Arema and Persebaya Surabaya in East Javan city.

At the Kanjuruhan Stadium, chaos broke out as soon as the final whistle sounded in the game that Persebaya Surabaya won 3-2.

Arema fans then invaded the ground, causing terrible mayhem. The fans reportedly started attacking police officers and burning cars as the event turned into anarchy.

Subsequently, police operatives started firing tear gas into the crowd which resulted in a stampede and huge chaos.

More than 300 people were rushed to nearby hospitals but many couldn’t make it to the hospital and some died during treatment.

Multiple reports claimed that some players who were still on the pitch during the incident were not spared during arguably the worst stadium disaster in history.

However, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has since expressed his condolences to the victims of the unfortunate incident.
