“We now support E-levy; it’s a necessary tax” — Gen Secretary of MoMo Agents Association makes U-turn

The Ghana Mobile Money Agents Association (MMAG) has for obvious reasons approved the electronic transfer levy (E-levy).

The association’s General Secretary, Evans Otumfuor, advised the government that members will support the E-implementation levy during a Jubilee House meeting on Tuesday, May 10, 2022.

Mr. President, let it be known that our company believes in paying taxes as a key tool to encourage development and progress,” the General Secretary said.

We discussed the E-levy with the Ministry of Finance, the Ghana Revenue Authority, and other key players, he stated.

He also said that “drastic acts are implemented when required” by the government. Evans Otumfuor says the fee is now lawful and everyone must pay. So we’re comrades, not foes.

The organization praised the government for taking a risk to generate revenue for the country’s prosperity. “The government has bravely reduced the electronic transaction charge from 1.75 percent to 1.5 percent and provided a large list of exclusions. We sought a bigger cut for fear of business implications.”

He also requested President Akufo-Addo to address some of the E-concerns. levy’s

The charge has hampered our ability to withdraw funds from our accounts and do other agent-related activities.

Concerned about the dearth of understanding regarding the E-levy, the General Secretary said the organization would help educate Ghanaians.

“It seems that the E-levy has been poorly communicated, Your Excellency. It is in the association’s best interest to encourage education and awareness. We are willing to accept any obligation the government assigns us to protect our firms and let customers utilize Mobile Money more confidently.”

Financial fraud, robbery, high operational expenses, and difficulty collecting funds are all concerns affecting the group.

In addition, they asked that they be included on boards and organizations whose policies or actions directly or indirectly affect their businesses.

According to MMAG’s General Secretary, the government may invest in the Mobile Money industry to produce more employment for young people.

President Akufo-Addo praised the organization for agreeing to engage with the government on the E-levy.

“I am also quite encouraged and grateful for this offer of partnership,” the President said.

He applauded industry stakeholders for highlighting concerns as they arise.

In this way, the law would be applicable for both the public and private sectors, the President said.

Ursula Owusu Ekuful, Minister of Communications, MMAG executive members, and other significant officials from the Communications Ministry and the Presidency were also present.
