Tyrone Iras Marhguy sues Achimota SHS, demands compensation, admission
A 2020 BECE graduate and Rastafarian, Tyrone Iras Marhguy who the Achimota School in line with the GES code of conduct denied admission amid his long hair has sued the Management of Motown at a high court.
The first-year student in a lawsuit sighted by Educationweb.com.gh has indicated his rights are being violated by the school’s actions.
Tyrone Iras Marhguy in his suit has asked the high court to direct the Headmistress of the Achimota School to with immediate effect enrol or admit him into his dream school for him to commence academic activities.
The dread student in addition has requested compensation from the Accra-based Achimota School for the “inconvenience, embarrassment, waste of time, and violation of his fundamental human rights and freedoms.”
“There is no lawful basis for [Achimota School] to interfere with the applicant’s right to education based on his rasta through which he manifests or expresses his constitutionally guaranteed right to religion and to practice and manifest same,” family of Tyrone Iras stated in the suit.
The lawsuit comes after the Achimota School Friday, March 19, refused two Rastafarian students admission with the reason being that it goes against the school rules to admit an individual with an unapproved hairstyle.
The Ghana Education Service however directed the Management of Motown to admit students, but the order was rejected by the school Headmistress citing that the students will only be admitted without dread.
