All schools including private schools were closed down on the 16th March, 2020. As you may know the private school teacher who contributes massively to the educational system of our country receives a salary of an average of 250.0 to 600.0cedis which is nothing to talk about considering the prices of goods in our country but better than the worse of it today. I stand to be corrected, the number of private schools in Ghana is about four times the number of public schools. According to the Integrated Business Establishment Survey in 2015, 44.1% represents private school teachers of the total employed teachers in our country. To add more most of the ‘Frontliners’ who were given stimulus packages graduated from private schools and that shows how important private schools and teachers are to the growth of our country.
Since the closure of schools in March 2020, all public school teachers continue to receive salaries but same can not be said of the private school teachers. We are left with nothing but empty stomachs and a possible layoff from our employers. We are all home now as you have directed and only God knows how we can feed ourselves and our families from now until when we will be free to resume work.
We have being promised of free food items, water and electricity but all these are yet to be realized by some of us. Even if this is available to us, it can not buy drugs for ourselves and families. Please do something in a matter of urgency to save the situation. Act very fast in your power to save mother Ghana from breeding criminals from these decent hardworking teachers who have been left hopeless as a result of the COVID-19.
God bless our homeland Ghana.
