With 400 million followers, Selena Gomez has broken the previous Instagram mark for most followers for a female user.
On March 17, the former Disney personality reached this milestone, just three months after joining Instagram again. Kylie Jenner, who had 382 million fans, had previously held the record.
The success of Gomez on Instagram is nothing new. For years, she has regularly ranked among the most popular celebrities on the platform. Her experience with social media, however, has not been smooth.
The performer admitted to deleting the photo-sharing app from her phone in 2019 after it began to negatively impact her mental health in a 2021 interview with Vogue. She admitted to InStyle in 2022 that at one time, Instagram had taken over as her entire universe.
The “Only Murders in the Building” actress referenced the Miley Cyrus song “Violet Chemistry,” which has the same name, on her most recent post by posting two photos without any makeup. The message of self-love and being at ease in one’s own skin is promoted in Gomez’s tweet.
She’s the most followed woman on IG, but not the most followed person. The title belongs to soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 562 million followers.
Selena Gomez, the first woman who has reached 400 Million Followers on Instagram, is one of the best examples of how she always uses her platform to promote love and acceptance, spread the awareness of mental health, and to help others. pic.twitter.com/tmSVxl1gLg
