New information being picked from local tabloids in Guinea reveals most of the players of the Syli Nationale (nickname of the Guinea national team) failed to return to their home country after they were knocked out at the ongoing AFCON tournament by the Gambia in the round of 16.
Before their participation in the big tournament, President Doumbouya tasked the team to win the cup or risk reimbursing every money invested in them.
According to the press reports, colonel Doumbouya who was not happy gave a follow-up instruction upon the team returned home.
“The cup or you reimburse the money that’s been invested in you,” the Guinean President sternly warned the players, as quoted by African Insider.
“The Council was informed of the return of the Syli Nationale early this morning. The President of the Transition deplored that the Guinean delegation returned to the country with only three players.
He instructed the Minister of Sports to reflect on a better organization of sports and particularly football with the detection, support, and training of young talents in our country,” the report says.
The new arrangements according to tfynews seek to change the way players are selected for the team, moving towards more local recruitment.
Meanhile, the president has reportedly told them he has forgiven them and invalidated his earlier warning but they have to return the money they were given that covered their expense from the quarterfinals all the way to the grand finale.
