Obuasi: Armed military disperse riot youth with gunshots for protesting arrest of illegal miners

Some youth in the Obuasi municipality of the Ashanti region stormed the Obuasi District Police Command to demand the release of some illegal miners who were in custody.

It took the intervention of some armed military officers to disperse them after firing some gunshots.

In protest to the arrest, the youth burnt some car tyres at the police command to register their displeasure with the cops for the detainment of the illegal miners otherwise known as ‘galamseyers’.

The miners were arrested after they exited a mine shaft belonging to AngloGold Obuasi Mine at Anwiam in the Obuasi East District.

Following the riots by the young men, a military reinforcement was deployed to instill peace at the command who fired the gunshots to get the youth dispersed.

Whilst some of the miners are being interrogated, 15 of them have been granted bail.

It is however unclear the number of illegal miners still in the shaft as authorities were making efforts to enable their exit.
