The next general election in Ghana is three years away. There are a number of political parties that are preparing for it in spite of the amount of time left. But one of the two major parties, the ruling New Patriotic Party and the opposition National Democratic Congress are expected to form Government after that particular election.
It is however emerging that the name New Patriotic Party may not feature in the next election all other things being equal. This will however be concluded by Sunday, 19th December 2021. Most Ghanaians are aware that the ruling party is holding its national delegates conference in Kumasi.
According to the general secretary of the party Mr. John Boadu , there are 91 proposals for the party to consider in this crucial conference but not 38 as published by some media outlets. Speaking on Joy FM on Saturday monitored by Eghnews.com, Mr. Boadu said top among the proposals is a change of name for the party. He explained that the New Patriotic Party is at least 27 years old in Ghana. Because of this many have suggested that the adjective ‘New’ be changed to ‘National’. This will see a renaming of the party from New Patriotic Party to National Patriotic Party with the abbreviation NPP.
He argued that even a person borne 27
years ago cannot be regarded as child or new hence there was the need to ensure that the name of the party goes in line with its development stage. He however admitted that it all lies in the hands of the conference to decide whether the name should be changed or not.
If this goes through as expected, the electoral commission will have to re-register the ruling party as National Patriotic Party while undoing records bearing New Patriotic Party. What this also mean is that Ghanaians will no longer see New Patriotic Party on the ballots in future elections.
