The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been warned that its chances of victory in the 2024 elections will depend greatly on how its Members of Parliament (MP) conduct themselves before the general elections.
According to the Editor-in-chief of the Insight newspaper, Kwasi Pratt, the chances of the opposition party in the next general elections will be enhanced or dwindled depending on how the Minority conducts itself in the august House.
“If [the Minority] can not decide so many things, it can frustrate so many things. But we are not seeing that in Parliament. What we are seeing in Parliament is troubling and I fully agree that the fate of the National Democratic Congress is in the hands of the Parliament. How the NDC performs in 2024 is dependent on how the Parliament performs today,” he said.
The NDC Minority MPs have in the past weeks come under intense pressure after it approved the nomination of all Ministers-designate despite a prior assurance that they were going to reject some of them.
The approval of the Ministers angered the base of the party so much that National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, lashed out and condemned them for working for their selfish interests rather than the party.
The party had expected that some nominees whose actions and inactions led to the killing of some Ghanaians during the 2020 elections should have been rejected.
Many also felt that those nominees who demonstrated incompetence for the ministries they were assigned to head during the vetting should been rejected by the NDC legislators on the Committee.
But as it turned out, no nominee has been rejected and this has incited the rank and file of the party.
Speaking on Alhaji and Alhaji show on Saturday, March 27, 2021, on Pan Africa television, Mr Pratt said the NDC in Parliament which has the same number (137) as Majority but for one independent MP, has a rare opportunity to show its strength and flex its muscles during this 8th Parliament.
He lamented that even if the NDC cannot dictate the pace in the House, it has the numbers to frustrate the business of the House until they are heard, yet the Minority is not utilising its impressive numbers.
Mr Pratt said since the inception of the 4th Republic, no opposition party has had the opportunity the current Minority has currently.
“None of the opposition parties has had the opportunity NDC has. A hung Parliament.
The NDC was in the position to decide who should become the Speaker and if the NDC works hard enough and so on, the NDC can decide so many things,” he said.
The veteran journalist and social commentator made the comments while speaking on the latest Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) that predicts the NDC will win the 2024 elections but not with its previous presidential aspirant, John Dramani Mahama.
Delving into the report, Mr Pratt rubbished it saying there was nothing new about it but said what will do the trick for the party, will be how the MPs conduct themselves in Parliament
