Hawkers at the Moree Junction on the Accra-Cape Coast highway are clad in red bands in protest of the closure of tollbooths across the country by the road ministry.
Speaking to Tv 3, the hawkers expressed massive grievances over the government’s decision to bring the collection of road and bridge tolls to cessation.
They say the new Initiative has negatively affected their businesses rendering them financially broke.
They call on the government to relook into the newly made decision else it will not only affect the education of their children but also their livelihoods.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has scrapped the collection of tolls on public roads and bridges nationwide.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Road Ministry said the initiative will kick start at exactly midnight on Thursday
Police personnel will now occupy tollbooths nationwide to ensure the directive is enforced and to also offer security.
“Motorists are kindly advised to approach the locations with caution and observe all safety measures that will be put in place,” part of the release said.
The Finance Minister has earlier announced the discontinuity of tolls collection in Parliament but he said the directive will become effective immediately after Parliament approves the budget.
Toll collectors are going to be reassigned to other roles in different fields.
