Billboards featuring large portraits of Liberian President George Weah are lining the streets of the capital Monrovia ahead of his 55th birthday on October 1.
According to a BBC report, the Monrovia City Council is currently erecting billboards throughout central Monrovia and other parts of the city.
It’s a continuous exercise, and each billboard conveys the same message.
“All leaders should strive to be like you because you are the epitome of excellence. Sir, happy birthday. The message reads, “We wish you the fulfilment of all the wishes lurking in the corners of your heart.”
Supporters of the ruling party say the president deserves it and are thrilled to see their leader’s portraits all over the place.
However, critics argue that the billboards are insensitive in a country where the majority of the population is impoverished.
It comes after Monrovia’s youthful mayor, Jefferson Koijee, celebrated his birthday with lavish events that included a street parade by supporters and a large display of his images on the streets.
