Feeling deceived, Emmanuel took the matter to court. After hearing the case, the magistrate ruled that Jennifer’s action amounted to defrauding by false pretense, which is a criminal offence under Nigerian law.
The court ordered her to either pay a fine of ₦450,000 (about GH¢3,230) or serve a prison sentence of seven years.
