‘KUKURANTUMI’ First European Aired Ghanaian Movie – Enfexgh Throwback Thursday

Kukurantumi: Road to Accra was produced in 1983. It is said to be one of the first Ghanaian films to be aired on many European countries’ television. It was directed by King Ampaw.

Telling a small story with a lot of heart and plenty of humour, Kukurantumi – Road to Accra was the first film trailblasing Ghanaian director King Ampaw made on his return to Ghana from Germany. An oddball comedy of errors filmed in Ampaw’s own hometown, Kukurantumi offers a stark reflection of late 20thcentury Ghanaian life, yet one that never loses sight of his country’s vibrancy and essential humanity.

Addey is a truck driver in rural Ghana, transporting both people and goods of questionable legality between his home village of Kukurantumi and the capital, Accra.

Addey, a hard-working family man makes his living driving a lorry between Accra, the capital, and his small village of Kukurantumi, which, in a local dialect, means the place where everything is too heavy to pick up.
Operating in the shadow of the country’s recent coup, where much was promised to the poor but little delivered, Addey’s already hardscrabble life is thrown into chaos when his truck breaks down and he can no longer feed his family.

When he is dismissed from his job for reasons beyond his control, his solution: marry his daughter Abena off to a wealthy businessman. Addey arranges a marriage between his pretty daughter, Abena, and a rich, middle-aged businessman she doesn’t love. Abena rebels and, with Bob, the poor young man she loves, runs off to Accra.

But things go from bad to worse when she flees to Accra with the man she loves. Kukurantumi: Road to Accra is a comparatively lively, good-humored film about a very sad subject – the breakdown of family relationships under the pressures of what’s called progress.
