‘I’ll quit teaching to become a cleaner in Dubai if I get the chance’ – Female SHS teacher laments

A government teacher has disclosed her willingness to quit teaching to become a cleaner perhaps in Dubai if the opportunity presents itself.

In her job as a teacher at the Senior High School (SHS), Sarah Yeboah Mensah has a Master’s Degree and teaches Biology and Integrated Science. She thinks that the money she will get as a cleaner might be better than her pay as a teacher.

It was Wednesday, January 26, 2021, when Mrs. Yeboah Mensah was on the show “Maakye” on Onua TV/FM, and she talked about her job as a SHS teacher who has a Master’s degree and makes less than GH3,000.00 a year.

If I get the chance to be a cleaner somewhere and the pay is good, I’ll stop teaching and do that. I have a Master’s degree and teach Biology and Integrated Science in the SHS. My take-home pay is less than $3000, Captain Smart told her.

Teachers’ lives have become so bad, she said, that some of their coworkers have to starve during school hours and ask for transportation before they can go home after school.

Further, another maths teacher at the SHS said that the politicization of the educational system is making teachers suffer in their jobs.

“Nothing goes well.” Our education has been politicized by them, and it’s the teachers who have to pay the price for it. Two years ago, I’ve never gone on vacation because I teach both green and gold tracks without any extra pay. She said, “I won’t let any of my kids teach because I don’t even want them to.”
