The Ministry of Education as part of efforts to improve learning outcomes and reduce learning poverty this year will introduce a National Standardised Test to evaluate primary 4 students on whether they can read or not, Adutwum has said.
Speaking at the Minister’s press briefing on Sunday, June 6, 2021, in Accra, the Minister for Education said the National Standardised Test will be conducted for the first time this year to all primary four students across the country.
“The World Bank talks about learning poverty and they talk about the fact that by year 10, 53% of students in various countries cannot read for understanding and Ghana is not an exception,” Dr Adutwum said.
“Our Human Capital Index in 0.44, so that is why the President Akufo-Addo says transform the space, so transforming of the space means that all Primary 4 students this year across the country are going to be tested,”
“This will help the Akufo-Addo led government see the challenges that are confronting us as a nation and then we will give them one year during primary five to do an intervention.” the teaching Minister stated.
According to him, the basic four students will also be tested on reading in primary 5 and primary 6 respectively adding that the test 2022 will commence from primary 2 students.
Dr Adutwum indicated the test will also generate reports which will detail the challenges facing the education system across the country in the areas of literacy and mathematics.
“We have a dashboard coming that will allow the Education Minister to log in and see the attendance of every district, to see how every district is doing and the results will be on the dashboard,” the Bosomtwe MP told the media.
He said reports generated from the test in mathematics and literacy will be given to every single parent in the country to monitor the progress of their wards. The results Adutwum said will be available on a website for public access.
