GES directive to admit rasta students in Achimota School disappointing – NAGRAT
The President of a Teacher Union has expressed disappointment in the Management of the Ghana Education Service for directing the Achimota School to accept two rasta students it denied admission last week Friday.
As widely reported by various local media outlets, the Headmistress of the Accra-based Achimota School Friday, March 19, 2021, rejected the school enrollment placement form of two individuals because of their long hair.
According to the Motown Management, it refused the dreadlocked students admission base on the Ghana Education Service (GES) code of conduct.
But, the Ghana Education Service (GES) in a statement copied to Educationweb.com.gh has directed for the Achimota School to admit the rasta students saying that “the students should tie their hair neatly.”
Mr Angel Carbonu, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) speaking on Citi TV’s Big Issue show said the decision for the School to accept the rasta students back will set a bad example.
“I disagree with it. I am surprised and very disappointed that the Ghana Education Service bent the rules for these Rastafarians. When the GES begins to make these exceptions, they create chaotic situations in the school for we the teachers to manage. If you stretch the frontiers of this, you will have problems so they didn’t have to limit it to only Rastafarians,” he stated
According to him, the Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) infringing on its own code of conduct is a step in the wrong direction.
“I disagree with it. I am very disappointed in the management of GES and I disagree with the directive to the school. The students were in the first place not denied admission. What the school authorities just said as a student of the school you can’t have this hair so cut it”, the NAGRAT member added.
