Once a defender for Bayern Munich, Jerome Boateng was fined €1.2 million by a German court for abusing his ex-girlfriend.
An appeal hearing in Munich found the former international and World Cup champion guilty of assault, violence, and insult.
The athlete stood trial for beating his girlfriend while on vacation in the Caribbean after the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The ex-girlfriend said the football player punched her after an altercation, making her faint for a second. This allegation was verified by the court on Wednesday.
“To the court’s conviction, the accused threw a cooler bag in the direction of the co-accuser causing them pain during an argument on a holiday visit to the Caribbean.
“In the further course of this evening, the accused caused an eye injury to the co-accuser during a physical altercation and caused further injuries. In these instances, the co-accuser was also insulted,” the court ruling read.
In September of 2021, during his first trial, he was given a €1.8 million fine. The prosecution requested a suspended sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment.
The €1.2 million fine will go toward helping groups that aid women who have been victims of abuse.
Jerome Boateng, a German who was born in Ghana, has refuted the allegations.
