All private, public school teachers to be licensed by 2024 – NTC

The Executive Secretary of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Dr Christain Addai Poku has said the Teaching Council by 2024 is expected to license both private and public school teachers in the country.

Speaking on Peace FM Kokrokoo show monitored by Educationweb.com.gh, the NTC Executive Secretary said just like doctors, accountants and others need a license to operate, teachers will also be licensed as professionals.

For private school teachers who are not professionals or have not gone to any teacher training institution, Dr Addai Poku said they would be given a three year period to upgrade themselves and sit for the teacher licensure.

According to him, unprofessional private school teachers who upgrade themselves within the three year period, sat and passed the Ghana teacher licensure examination will be issued a license as professional teachers.

“So we have targeted to license all teachers in the system, both private and public school teachers by the next four years,” he told Kwame Sefa Kayi.

The NTC official said the license of in-service teachers who are professional teachers will last for 3 years, and after the three year period be renewed.

For unprofessional teachers, Mr Poku said the license will last for a year and be renewed for only three years to enable them to upgrade themselves.

Asked what will happen if an unprofessional teacher after the three year period has upgraded him/herself, the NTC Executive Secretary replied “such teachers according to the laws will be phased out from the classrooms.”
