499 candidates were ‘unfairly’ rejected – Law School SRC barks at GLC

The Students Representative Council (SRC) of the Ghana School of Law has criticised the General Legal Council (GLC) for rejecting the admission of some 499 students although they obtained the required 50% threshold during the entrance exams.

The 499 students were among the 790 students denied admission to the Ghana School of Law in the latest entrance exams.

Administrators of the school have explained that the 499 students have been denied entry to the school because they did not obtain the 50% mark in both sections A and B of the test papers.

“Candidates or applicants who obtained the minimum threshold mark of 50% each in the two sections for A & B (Part A & Part B) of the exam are eligible to be considered for admission by the General Legal Council for the 2021/2022 academic year to pursue the professional law course.

“The decision of the General Legal Council in respect of the published results of the entrance examination is final. Please be informed accordingly,” the Director of Legal Education, Mr Kwasi Prempeh-Eck, said.

However, at a press conference addressed by SRC President, Wonder Victor Kutor, on Thursday, October 8, 2021, the student body of the Ghana School of Law forcefully submitted that the GLC, the administers the entrance exams, failed to give prior notice of the decision to admit only those students that scored at least 50% in both section A and B.

“The issue of prior notice is key. It is the view of the SRC that the notice that candidates must obtain at least 50% both in sections A and B should have come with the announcement” inviting candidates to apply to enter the law school, he said.

“We respectfully call on the General Legal Council to reconsider its decision, which we deem as unfair, to consider the 499 students as eligible for admission to the Ghana School of Law.

The SRC is cooperating with management…we have reason to believe that they will admit the 499 candidates,” Mr Kutor said.

Mr Kutor said the SRC would take on the GLC if the students were not admitted.
He, however, did not say what steps the SRC would take. “We are holding hour cards closely to our chest,” he said.
The National Association of Law Students (NALS) earlier made a similar call.

NALS is demanding that the Chief Justice and the Attorney-General move swiftly to re-admit some 499 students.
