President Akufo Addo, has described the results of the 2022 batch of students who wrote the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as the best in the last eight years.
According to President Akufo-Addo, “six (6) years after the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, which has guaranteed a minimum of Senior High School education for 1.7 million Ghanaian children, the highest such enrolment in our history, I can state, without equivocation, that I am very proud of the policy and its results so far.”
In a speech at Opoku Ware Senior High School’s 70th anniversary celebration on December 3, 2022, President Akufo-Addo remarked that 60.39 percent of the third class of “Akufo-Addo graduates” scored A1-C6 in English, compared to 51.6% in 2016.
In Integrated Science, 62.45% scored A1-C6 in 2022, compared to 48.35% in 2016, a minor decrease from 2021’s 65.70%.

President Akufo-Addo said 61.39 percent of pupils scored A1-C6 in math, up from 33.12 percent in 2016; and 71.51% scored A1-C6 in social studies, up from 54.55% in 2016.
“Let’s not forget, the 2021 class of students, who also achieved great achievements, were the pioneers of the double track system,” he remarked.

“The 2022 results are the best in eight years,” said the president. Free SHS and its consequences are no longer debatable. It works wonderfully.”
In his address, President Akufo-Addo told the gathering, which included the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Chairperson of the Council of State, Nana Otuo Sriboe II, that investing in education and skills training of our youth is the most efficient way to create a society of opportunities and guarantee the future of our nation.
“Ghanaians like you and I, and particularly today’s young, will develop Ghana,” he stated. We can’t become a developed country without an educated population.
President Akufo-Addo said that despite economic constraints, “Government has allocated even more resources to the Free SHS initiative.” This year’s budget for Free SHS is GH2.96 billion, up from GH2.3 billion in 2022.
As he did on Farmers’ Day, the President called on all Ghanaians to support the budgetary measures the government has proposed to restore macroeconomic stability, promote inclusive growth, and safeguard the poor.
“I’m hopeful the 2023 budget will solve our economic issues,” he continued
